About us
The studio is designed to be a supportive, safe, and welcoming environment for creative people to explore and pursue their art in ceramics.
Tail in the Mud came from the phrase “dragging tail in the mud” which came from the writing of Zhuangzi, suggests a willingness to endure difficult circumstances and a complete disregard for social status or reputation, even if it means being seen as unconventional or undesirable. It's a way of saying, "I'd rather be truly free than be constrained by societal expectations." It originated in "The Art of the Way," where one embraces spontaneity and rejects prescribed paths, even if it means being seen as "dragging their tail in the mud." It's a statement of independence and self-acceptance, even if that means being perceived as unconventional by society.
The studio is located in a former machine shop. The space was renovated and new lights, sinks, electrical system, and all the equipment needed to support a pottery studio. The studio table legs were lumbers salvaged from a construction site. Most of the chairs are salvaged from sidewalks. The counters which the glazes are on are made from packing materials which came with the wheels. The glaze buckets are dry wall compound buckets. The studio is reusing, repurposing, and otherwise reducing the impact on the environment as possible. We hope you will help us in the effort.
