In this four-week ceramics workshop, students will learn how a simple drawn shape can evolve into a three-dimensional ceramic form. The workshop emphasizes finding an individual expressive form, exploring positive and negative space, developing templates, and translating those ideas into interlocking slab-built pieces. Each student will create three related forms designed to work together, refine them for bisque firing, and complete the workshop by glazing the finished pieces. By the end of the four-week workshop, each student will have developed a personal three-part form through drawing and experimentation and translate it into a finished group of related interlocking, slab-built ceramic forms.
Session 1: Finding Shapes
Drawing, positive and negative space, and template making
Session 2: Building Forms
Translating two-dimensional templates into slab-built ceramic forms. Students will learn to build the three primary interrelated forms and prepare them for refinement
Session 3: Refinement & Finishing
Resolving the forms and preparing them for bisque firing. Students finish construction and refine all three pieces. All three forms are finished and ready for bisque firing.
Session 4: Glazing & Final Composition
Using glaze to enhance the forms and the relationships among them. Students will plan a glaze approach for the three-piece composition, test different arrangements before committing to their final surface choices and glaze each bisque-fired form.

Pin tool
Metal ribs (one smooth and one serrated)
Sponge
Wooden tools for getting in small corners
Apron and a hand towel (although clay does wash out of clothes)
