Refining Your Throwing Skills July 12th - August 31st

$500.00

Instructor: Chin Lin

Dates: Sundays, July 12th - August 31st (8 sessions)

Time: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Skill Level: Intermediate

A well-made piece of pottery should have appropriate weight and wall thickness in relation to its size and function. This class will focus on achieving proper thickness and weight when throwing, along with decorative techniques such as applying colored slip and textures.

Students will plan and create a mug (in a size of their choosing), a small bowl, and a pasta bowl or plate. Chin will also introduce the process of making a set, helping students develop the skill of consistency and control in their work. If time allows, tall forms will also be explored.

The class will emphasize both planning and making, followed by a review of finished work to assess how closely the final pieces align with the original intent. The goal is to help students achieve the forms they envision and, if desired, create matching sets.

Students are expected to already have the ability to center clay and create basic forms.

About Chin

Chin started pottery as a freshman in college to release the pressure college life.  He started teaching the year after in 1983.  Over the years, he met many students who were able to use pottery to center their lives.  He believes the pottery studio should be a place of support through ceramics and the act of making art.  He has been teaching for over forty years in different studio including MIT Student Art, UC Berkely Student Center, and LexArt.

Chin grew up in Taiwan and came to the US when he was 15. His work is influenced by both the oriental background as well as the modern US education.  He will throw classic forms as well as working on abstract sculptures. Through potter Jeff Margolin, Chin learned how to stretch an almost leather hard cylinder. In May of 2025, he enrolled in a two week intensive Korean Onggi making class in Soul, South Korea with renown artist Kaw-Kyung Tae.
